I believe what you need to find out is regulations in China. There are many ways to manage your US accounts on-line. The simpliest for me is to open an oversea account in Schwab, and you can get access to your account as far as you have access to to internet, even you were in Iraq. Also, you can setup "Money Link" to transfer your dough back and forth between, say, your Schwab account and your account in Bank of China in Shanghai or whereever in China. The only limit is whether you will pay to Bank of China, or Chinese authorities, when your transfer you fund in and out of China.
You do not have to buy stocks. Your fund can be in Money Market, or even in CD and being FDIC insured (up to $100K for one account. If your fund exceed this, open more accounts), which is safer than most accounts in the other part of the world.
