I lived in a mid sized town in the middle west US for 10 years. My residents is in a middle class neighborhood. I have a house, a car, a huge lawn (which takes at least one hour to trim the grass every week).I arrived in the US with nothing and within 10 years. I got my degree, worked for large US coorporations, survived a few ups and downs at work. I started a small business and finally settled down in a very friendly but aged neighborhood.
The neighborhood was build in 1950s. Most of the neighbors moved in when they were in their 20s- 30s and never left the place. When I first moved in, my next neighbor Rod proudly pronounced that there was no crime in the neighborhood for 20 + years. Now they are long retired. They trim the tree, organize the gardens. going out to the mall for morning walks, go on road trip twice a year and watch TV every day.
They have been living in the same house for 50 years, can you believe that?
Every day I came back to my house, i looked at them and told myself that I will be like them for the rest of my life.
Finally, I am tired of this. I announced that i want to get busy living instead of get busy dying and packed my bags and there i was, gone.
Since then, I have returned for a few times visiting neigbors and checking on the house which I rented out. Every time I returned, I was invited for coffee with the neighors. I always bragged about my advanture in China and the good lifes there. They were listening with total amuzement. "Exotic and exicting". They will say. "Come back next year and tell us more". It become apparant that they look forward to see me so that I can bring them news, stories and most importantly, hope. Hope is a beautiful thing.
I want to get busy living instead of get busy dying.
