China Yuchai Profit Drops 20 Percent

China Yuchai International Ltd., a Singapore-based maker of diesel engines and generators, on Wednesday reported that second-quarter income fell 20 percent from the year-ago period.
The company reported net income of $12 million, below the $15.1 million reported in the year-ago period. Net sales also declined, falling 1.5 percent to $138.9 million from $141 million last year. Total unit sales were down 5 percent year-over-year.
New York Stock Exchange-listed shares of the company dropped 14 percent, or $2.17, to $13.32 on the news.
China Yuchai said trade account receivables and inventories increased during the period ending June 30 due to higher sales volume and normal seasonality factors. Cash balances decreased while bank borrowings have risen during the period, due to increased capital expenditure payments made during the past six months.
One reason for sluggish sales was that demand for new trucks was restrained as buyers waited to see how strict Chinese government authorities will be in enforcing new traffic regulations regarding overloading and noncompliance with vehicle weight and length rules. However, China Yuchai said ongoing expansion of new highways and tolls in China will lead to increased demand for trucks and buses, and therefore boost sales of the company's diesel engines.
